COURSE CURRICULUM

The Human-Animal Interaction with Psychology degree with Foundation Year is structured over four years to develop students’ understanding of the relationship between humans and animals, alongside key psychological and biological concepts. In the first year, students build a foundation in animal biology, care, and academic skills, supported by practical experience within an animal collection. The second year introduces core topics such as human psychology, animal behaviour and welfare, systems biology, and animal health, helping students understand both human and animal perspectives in this relationship. In the third year, students explore more specialised areas including anthrozoology, behaviour change, animal-assisted interventions, and research methods, while also having the option to tailor their studies through modules such as companion animal behaviour or equine behaviour. The final year focuses on advanced study and career preparation, including a dissertation research project on a chosen topic and modules exploring contemporary issues and applied psychology within human-animal interactions. Students also gain further professional experience through volunteering opportunities. Optional modules allow deeper exploration of areas such as animal welfare or cognitive ethology. Overall, the course combines theoretical knowledge, practical experience, and research skills to prepare graduates for careers that promote ethical and effective human-animal relationships across a range of settings.
