COURSE CURRICULUM

The Animal Behaviour and Welfare degree with Foundation Year is structured over four years to develop students’ scientific knowledge, practical skills, and understanding of animal welfare across a range of species. In the first year, students build a foundation in animal studies, biological science, and academic skills, preparing them for further study. The second year focuses on key topics such as animal behaviour, health, welfare, genetics, and systems biology, alongside developing essential academic and professional skills. In the third year, students explore more advanced concepts including welfare assessment, ethics, research methods, and companion animal behaviour and training, with opportunities to tailor their studies through optional modules such as field courses or professional experience. The final year allows students to specialise further and prepare for their careers through advanced topics such as wildlife and zoo management, cognitive ethology, biodiversity and conservation, and the welfare of trade animals. A major component of the final year is the dissertation research project, where students investigate a topic of personal interest. Throughout the course, students also gain practical and industry experience, supporting their employability. Overall, the program combines theory, research, and hands-on learning to prepare graduates for careers in animal welfare, conservation, research, and related fields.
