COURSE CURRICULUM

The Veterinary Nursing degree is structured over four years to develop students’ knowledge, clinical skills, and professional competence. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in key areas such as anatomy, animal husbandry, communication, and basic clinical skills, alongside an introduction to patient care and pharmacy management. The second year focuses on practical application, where students complete a minimum of 1,800 hours in an approved veterinary training practice as a Student Veterinary Nurse. During this time, they develop hands-on clinical experience, supported by a clinical coach and tutor, while completing a Nursing Progress Log to track their development. In the third year, students return to university to refine their practical abilities and expand their knowledge in areas such as anaesthesia, diagnostics, theatre practice, and evidence-based veterinary nursing, alongside developing research skills. The final year allows students to specialise and prepare for their future careers, combining advanced study with a dissertation research project. Students also gain experience in clinical coaching by supporting first-year learners, enhancing their leadership and teaching abilities. Overall, the course combines theoretical learning, extensive practical experience, and research skills to prepare graduates for a successful and professional career in veterinary nursing.
