COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Physical Education and School Sport degree equips students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience required to become effective PE teachers or work in youth sport and physical activity. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge in exercise physiology, sport and exercise psychology, strength and conditioning, and research skills, while gaining hands-on experience teaching and coaching through industry-facing modules. Emphasis is placed on understanding the national curriculum, the differences between coaching and teaching, and applying theoretical knowledge in real-world contexts. In the second year, students advance their practical and professional skills by gaining experience across different Key Stages, exploring learning theories, physical literacy, and curriculum planning, while refining their coaching and teaching through on-site placements. Modules focus on school sport development, pedagogy, and applied research, with opportunities to undertake independent projects or study trips. In the final year, students consolidate their learning, tailoring their studies to specific career goals while continuing practical teaching placements, including swimming and trampolining. They also complete a substantial dissertation project, applying research and practical insights to a chosen topic. Students are supported in preparing for teaching careers, including PGCE applications, while optional modules allow exploration of youth athlete development, high-performing teams, and contemporary issues in sport and education, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for diverse roles within education and sport.
