COURSE CURRICULUM

The Equine Performance and Welfare degree is structured over three years to provide a strong combination of scientific knowledge, practical skills, and ethical understanding of the equine industry. In the first year, students build a foundation in equitation science, equestrian practice, horse-human interactions, and equine biology, alongside gaining insight into the structure and management of the equine industry. The second year focuses on applying this knowledge to real-world contexts, with an emphasis on sustainability, welfare, and performance. Students explore topics such as equine fitness and training, research methods, and the One Welfare framework, while also completing industry placement hours to gain practical experience. In the final year, students advance their understanding through independent research and specialised modules that address contemporary challenges in the equine sector. These include developments in equine research, ethical considerations, and the evolution of equestrian culture, as well as the relationship between rider performance and equine welfare. Throughout the course, there is a strong focus on promoting sustainable and welfare-driven practices, encouraging students to critically evaluate current approaches and contribute to positive change. Overall, the program prepares graduates to support both equine performance and wellbeing while influencing future practices within the industry.
