COURSE CURRICULUM

The Equine Performance and Coaching degree is structured over three years to develop both theoretical knowledge and practical coaching expertise. In the first year, students build a foundation in equestrian performance, coaching principles, and equine science, including anatomy, physiology, and industry knowledge, while also exploring human behaviour and learning theory to support effective coaching. Practical skills are developed through equestrian practice and coaching portfolios aligned with industry standards. In the second year, students deepen their understanding of coaching pedagogy, equine fitness, and training, alongside studying welfare through the One Welfare framework. They also gain valuable real-world experience through a compulsory industry placement and develop research skills to prepare for independent study. An optional placement year offers further professional experience. In the final year, students focus on refining their coaching abilities through critical reflection and advanced study of topics such as rider performance, equine welfare, and evolving equestrian practices. They also complete an independent research dissertation and gain insight into business management within the equine sector. Overall, the course combines coaching theory, scientific understanding, and hands-on experience, preparing graduates to become skilled, reflective equestrian coaches capable of enhancing both horse and rider performance while promoting welfare and ethical practices.
