COURSE CURRICULUM

The MRes programme is delivered through a combination of intensive taught modules, independent study, and supervised research. Students complete four taught modules, typically delivered in one- or two-week blocks between October and March, with some continuing until June, while the majority of the programme is dedicated to a 120-credit independent research project. Two core modules develop essential postgraduate study and research skills, while the remaining modules are selected to complement each student’s chosen research area. Teaching is supported through a virtual learning environment that provides access to lecture materials, podcasts, readings, and additional learning resources. Learning activities include lectures, seminars, tutorials, laboratory sessions, practical exercises, study visits, guest lectures, and independent study through assignments and directed reading. Students are encouraged to engage with current academic literature and receive guidance from module tutors on the latest developments in their field. Throughout the research project, each student works closely with an academic supervisor who provides support with project planning, methodology, professional development, and research progress. Assessment is primarily coursework-based and includes literature reviews, research essays, problem-solving assignments, industry-sponsored projects, written reports, presentations, portfolios, team exercises, and experimental work, although some modules include examinations. Regular written feedback helps students strengthen their academic, research, analytical, and communication skills while preparing them for advanced research or professional careers.
