COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Veterinary Nursing programme is designed to develop highly skilled, reflective and professionally competent Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs) through a structured blend of academic study, clinical training and workplace experience. In Year 1, students build core foundations in anatomy and physiology, companion animal management, clinical and communication skills, nursing care, and professional development, alongside an introduction to evidence-based veterinary nursing and digital skills. Early professional registration requirements ensure students are aligned with Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) standards from the beginning. In Year 2, learning advances into applied clinical practice, diagnostic techniques, medical nursing, anaesthesia and theatre practice, research skills, and leadership and business skills for veterinary nurses. Optional modules allow specialisation in areas such as feline-friendly practice or wildlife care. A placement year provides extensive real-world experience in veterinary settings, allowing students to consolidate practical competencies. In the final year, students complete a dissertation alongside modules in collaborative problem-solving, consulting skills, and clinical specialisms, further strengthening professional decision-making and communication abilities. Additional optional pathways may include equine, exotic, farm animal nursing, or complementary therapy. Throughout the programme, students progressively meet professional registration requirements while developing clinical expertise, critical thinking, and leadership skills required for modern veterinary nursing practice.
