COURSE CURRICULUM

The BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering (with Placement) programme provides a strong foundation in core engineering principles while developing advanced technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills for modern engineering careers. In the first year, students study fundamental topics including materials, mechanical science, electronics and programming, actuation systems, measurement techniques, and professional engineering practice. These modules build essential knowledge in design, systems thinking, and applied engineering. In the second year, students progress to more advanced areas such as quality improvement methodologies (DMAIC), design and validation, integrated electronic systems, materials engineering, energy production, transfer and storage, and advanced mechanical science. Optional modules in Agri-Tech and Autonomous Systems allow exploration of emerging technologies relevant to industry innovation. A compulsory placement year provides hands-on experience in an industrial setting, helping students apply academic learning to real-world engineering challenges while developing professional competence and employability skills. In the final year, students engage with higher-level topics including computer programming for engineers, ethics and sustainability, advanced engineering analysis, and global engineering challenges. A substantial group engineering project enhances teamwork and applied problem-solving abilities, while the honours project allows for independent research into a specialist area of mechanical engineering. Throughout the programme, students develop expertise in design, analysis, materials, energy systems, programming, and sustainable engineering practice, preparing them for careers in mechanical design, energy systems, manufacturing, consultancy, and advanced engineering industries.
