COURSE CURRICULUM

The BEng (Hons) Automotive Engineering curriculum provides a comprehensive education in mechanical, electronic, and vehicle engineering, preparing students for careers in the automotive and off-highway vehicle sectors. In the first year, students develop a strong foundation in engineering principles through modules covering professional engineering practice, materials, problem-solving, electronics, microcontrollers and programming, actuation systems, measurement techniques, and mechanical science. These modules establish essential technical and analytical skills required for engineering design and development. In the second year, students expand their knowledge through advanced study of quality improvement methodologies, design and validation, integrated electronic systems, vehicle systems, off-highway vehicle mobility, vehicle testing, and mechanical science. Elective modules such as Agri-Tech and Autonomous Systems allow students to explore emerging technologies and specialist areas relevant to modern vehicle engineering. A full placement year provides valuable industry experience, enabling students to apply their knowledge in professional environments and develop practical skills sought by employers. In the final year, the programme focuses on advanced engineering topics including power hydraulic systems, vehicle dynamics, noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), power systems, ethics, sustainability, and collaborative engineering projects. The honours engineering project allows students to undertake independent research and solve complex engineering challenges. Throughout the course, students develop expertise in vehicle design, testing, systems integration, electronics, mechanics, and innovation, preparing them for careers in automotive engineering, vehicle development, research, manufacturing, testing, and advanced mobility technologies.
