COURSE CURRICULUM

The Social Work course is structured over two years and is designed to blend academic learning with practical experience, preparing students for the realities of professional social work. In the first year, students take five core modules: Practising Social Work Law, Situating Social Work, Theorising for Social Work, Practising Social Work Skills and Knowledge, and Researching for Social Work. These modules provide a foundation in social work legislation, theoretical frameworks, and essential practice skills. Alongside academic learning, students complete a 70-day supervised direct practice placement, allowing them to apply their knowledge in real-world settings and gain practical experience in the field.In the second year, the focus deepens as students take on a 100-day supervised direct practice placement, which further develops their professional capabilities and understanding of complex practice environments. The academic modules in year two include Organisational Behaviour, which explores the structure and function of organisations within social services; Practising Research Mindedness (Dissertation), which enables students to carry out independent research in a relevant area of interest; and Making Professional Identity, which helps students critically reflect on their development and the formation of their professional social work identity.This course structure is designed to ensure that students graduate with not only a solid academic background but also extensive hands-on experience. The balance between theory, research, and direct practice placements supports students in developing the competencies required for effective and ethical social work. It also prepares them to enter the workforce with confidence in their knowledge, skills, and ability to make informed, reflective decisions in diverse and challenging environments.
