COURSE CURRICULUM
The four-year biosciences degree program is structured to provide students with a thorough understanding of biological systems, disease processes, and modern laboratory techniques, while gradually developing their research and analytical skills. In the first year, students begin with foundational subjects such as Biological Chemistry and Human Physiology, which introduce the chemical and functional principles of living organisms. Core Skills in Biosciences 1 supports academic and practical competencies essential for further study. In the second year, the curriculum deepens with modules like Introduction to Microbiology and Mechanisms of Cellular Regulation, offering insight into microbial life and cellular control processes. Students also study Fundamental Cell Biology and Pathophysiology, bridging the gap between health and disease, while Core Skills in Biosciences 2 and Practical Skills in Biomolecular Sciences ensure they gain essential hands-on lab experience. The third year introduces more specialized topics through core modules such as Fundamentals of Drug Action, Molecular Diagnostics, and Systematic and Cellular Pathology. These modules focus on how drugs interact with biological systems, how diseases are diagnosed at the molecular level, and the structural changes that occur in tissues during disease. Students can also choose from optional modules such as Cell Signalling and Trafficking Therapies, Experimental Design and Analysis, Pharmacology of Chemical Mediators, or undertake a Bioscience Placement, which provides real-world industry or research experience and is worth triple credits. In the final year, students carry out a major research Project and Workshop, a double credit module that allows them to investigate a topic in depth. Other advanced modules include Biology of Disease, Translational Medicine, Neuropharmacology, and Tissue Networks and Disease, which explore current biomedical research and therapeutic applications. Overall, the program combines theoretical knowledge with extensive practical training, preparing graduates for careers in biomedical research, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, or further academic study.
