COURSE CURRICULUM

The Learning Disability Nursing degree is a comprehensive program designed to prepare students to support individuals with learning disabilities in achieving better health and wellbeing. In the first year, students are introduced to the core principles of nursing through modules such as Values and Rights Based Nursing Practice, Health Improvement, Contemporary Health Care Delivery, and Introduction to Evidence Based Practice. These foundational subjects develop students’ understanding of person-centred care, the healthcare system, and how to critically engage with research. In the second year, the focus shifts toward learning disability-specific care with modules like Working in Interprofessional Teams, Promoting Personal Outcomes for People with Learning Disabilities, and Optimising Health Assets. These modules highlight the importance of collaboration, advocacy, and empowering individuals to live full and healthy lives. The third year builds on this knowledge by deepening students' analytical and practical skills through modules such as Applying Evidence Based Practice, Promoting Health Equality, and Risk Enablement in Learning Disability Nursing, all of which prepare students to deliver safe, equitable care in diverse and often complex situations. In the final year, students complete an Honours Level Dissertation alongside modules on Leadership in Interprofessional Teams and Advancing the Application of Values Based Nursing Practice. This final stage enhances leadership capabilities and promotes reflective, evidence-based approaches to professional development. Overall, the program equips students with the knowledge, clinical skills, and ethical grounding to provide high-quality, compassionate care and to advocate for the health and rights of people with learning disabilities.
