COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biological Sciences degree is a flexible, skills-focused program that allows students to tailor their studies to their interests within areas such as cell and molecular sciences, microbiology, pharmacology, neuroscience, and food sciences. After a common introductory phase during the first three trimesters, students begin to customize their learning pathway with a selection of optional modules. The course places strong emphasis on hands-on experience, with substantial laboratory work integrated throughout the curriculum to prepare students for a wide range of science-based careers. In the second year, students develop foundational knowledge through core modules such as Core Skills in Bioscience 2, Introduction to Microbiology, Mechanisms of Cellular Regulation, Practical Skills in Biomolecular Sciences, Fundamental Cell Biology, and Pathophysiology. These subjects build a strong base in both theory and lab techniques. In year three, the curriculum becomes more specialized. In Trimester A, students choose from options like Molecular Diagnostics, Biotechnology, Fundamentals of Drug Action, Clinical Microbiology, and Pathology. Trimester B includes Experimental Design and Analysis, with further options such as Bioinformatics and Genomics, Cell Signalling and Trafficking, Pharmacology, Nutrition and Public Health, and a placement opportunity, which gives students valuable real-world experience. In the final year, students complete an Honours Project and engage with advanced topics in Biology of Disease and Translational Medicine in Trimester A. In Trimester B, they can choose from focused modules such as Concepts in Infectious Disease, Food Toxicology, Microbial Pathogenesis, Neuropharmacology, and Tissue Networks and Disease. Throughout the program, students benefit from the expertise of research-active staff and a curriculum designed to keep pace with developments in biomedical and life sciences. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in laboratory research, biotechnology, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and further academic study.
