COURSE CURRICULUM

The Paramedic Science degree is a comprehensive, practice-led program that prepares students to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care in pre-hospital and urgent care settings. In Year 1, students begin with core theoretical and practical foundations through modules such as Foundations of Paramedic Practice, Legal and Ethical Frameworks, Human Physiology, and Clinical Skills for patient assessment and management. Learning is reinforced through extensive practice-based education, including placements in care homes and with ambulance services, providing early exposure to real-world patient care. Students also complete essential external training on moving and handling and engage with online modules to prepare for placement environments.In Year 2, the focus expands to include psychosocial health and the development of more advanced clinical skills. Modules explore the broader social determinants of health, mental health care, pharmacology, and evidence-based practice. Students deepen their clinical decision-making and safeguarding knowledge through hands-on modules that address urgent and non-emergency care. Practice placements increase in complexity and variety, with ambulance placements complemented by time in NHS specialties such as paediatrics, maternity, A&E, mental health, and cardiology. A unique feature of this year is the opportunity for a third-sector or international placement, offering broader perspectives on care provision.In Year 3, students transition to professional readiness. Academic modules focus on applying evidence-based practice, leadership, and preparation for continuing professional development. Clinical learning culminates with advanced topics such as major incident response and palliative care. Final practice placements consolidate skills and ensure students meet the professional competencies required for registration. This final year emphasizes autonomy, professional accountability, and reflective practice, equipping graduates for successful careers as paramedics in dynamic healthcare environments.
