COURSE CURRICULUM

The Learning Disability Nursing degree is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge to support individuals with learning disabilities in achieving better health and life outcomes. In the first year, students are introduced to the foundational principles of nursing through modules such as Values and Rights Based Nursing Practice, Health Improvement, Contemporary Health Care Delivery, and Introduction to Evidence Based Practice. These modules lay the groundwork for understanding ethical, person-centred care and the role of research in practice. In the second year, the focus shifts to the specific needs of people with learning disabilities, with modules including Working in Interprofessional Teams, Promoting Personal Outcomes for People with Learning Disabilities, and Optimising Health Assets for People with Learning Disabilities. These modules emphasize collaboration, individualized care planning, and empowering people with learning disabilities to achieve their personal goals. The third year builds on this knowledge with more advanced and applied learning. Students study Applying Evidence Based Practice, Promoting Health Equality for People with Learning Disabilities, and Risk Enablement in Learning Disability Nursing. These modules prepare students to advocate for equal health access, make informed decisions in complex situations, and support safe, autonomous living for individuals with learning disabilities. The program integrates theory with practical experience across all years, preparing students for a rewarding career supporting people with learning disabilities to live fulfilling, healthy lives.
