COURSE CURRICULUM

The child nursing program is structured over three years and focuses on developing the essential knowledge, values, and clinical skills required to provide safe, compassionate, and effective care to children and young people. In the first year, students are introduced to key principles of nursing and healthcare through core modules including Values and Rights Based Nursing Practice, Health Improvement, Contemporary Health Care Delivery, and Introduction to Evidence Based Practice. These modules establish a foundation in ethical practice, public health, the structure of modern healthcare systems, and the importance of research-informed care. In the second year, the focus shifts to more specific aspects of child nursing. Students take modules such as Developing Professional Skills for Child Nursing Practice and The Context of Care for Children, Young People and their Families. These courses emphasize the unique needs of children within healthcare settings, family-centered care, and the development of essential clinical skills tailored to paediatric nursing. In the third and final year, students work to consolidate their learning and prepare for professional practice. The modules Consolidating Professional Skills for Child Nursing Practice and Continuing Conditions in the Context of Children’s Nursing focus on managing long-term and complex health needs in paediatric patients, while also enhancing decision-making and critical thinking in real-world scenarios. This progression ensures that students are not only clinically competent but also understand the social, emotional, and developmental factors involved in caring for children and supporting their families. By the end of the program, graduates are well-prepared to register as child nurses and work confidently in a variety of healthcare environments, providing high-quality, family-centred care across a range of paediatric conditions and settings.
