COURSE CURRICULUM

The journalism and media program is structured over four years, progressively developing students' skills in media production, journalism, analysis, and communication law. In the first year, students are introduced to core areas of media and journalism through modules such as Radio Production, Global Challenges for Business & Society, Media Industries, TV Production, News Writing & Journalism, and Introduction to Media Analysis. These courses provide foundational technical and theoretical knowledge essential for understanding the media landscape. In the second year, the program expands into more specialized areas, including Digital Production, Multi-level Governance, Reporting & Newspaper Journalism, Feature Writing & Magazine Journalism, Policy and Regulation for Media and Journalism, Media, Identity & Society, and Shorthand. This stage sharpens both the practical and analytical skills needed for reporting, writing, and understanding the regulatory and social contexts of media. In the third year, the focus intensifies on professional readiness and ethical responsibility with core modules like Media Ethics, Newsdays (live newsroom experience), PR Campaigns and Proposals, Communication Law and Regulation (NCTJ-accredited), Media Audiences, Effects and Representation, and News Production and Presentation. These prepare students for the fast-paced and responsible environment of journalism and public communication. The final year includes Specialist Reporting and an Honours Research Project, where students apply their skills through in-depth journalistic inquiry and independent research. A wide range of optional modules such as Scotland the Media & National Identity, Fan Cultures, Unscripted Content Creation, Dramatic Writing, Industry Engagement, Disney, Marvel & DC, Sport and the Media, and others allow students to customize their learning path toward areas of interest like environmental journalism, digital media strategy, or entertainment coverage. Overall, the program offers a balanced mix of theoretical insight, technical training, and practical experience, preparing graduates for dynamic careers in journalism, media production, communications, and related industries.
