COURSE CURRICULUM

This master’s course in Illustration is structured across three study blocks and designed to develop your individual authorial voice through critical reflection, contextual understanding, and professional practice. In Study Block 1, you’ll undertake *Visual Language & Communication*, a module focused on refining your visual storytelling abilities, experimenting with different methods of communication, and deepening your understanding of how images convey meaning. Alongside this, *Research & Context* will help you explore broader theoretical frameworks and historical influences, enabling you to position your work critically within contemporary illustration practice.Study Block 2 progresses your development through *Sustaining a Practice*, where you begin to define your long-term creative direction and consider how your authorial intent translates into a viable, professional practice. At the same time, *Application: External & Collaboration* invites you to explore real-world engagement by working with external partners or collaborators. This practical component helps bridge the gap between academic exploration and professional application, encouraging the development of communication, negotiation, and project management skills essential for creative industries.In Study Block 3, you’ll complete the *Final Major Project*, a substantial, self-directed body of work that synthesises your research, practice and authorial vision. Supporting elements include *Negotiated Projects* such as a critical publication, research presentation, and extended essay, which allow you to explore and articulate the conceptual foundations of your work. Throughout the course, there is a strong emphasis on self-direction, critical inquiry and experimentation, empowering you to build a confident, sustainable practice. The structure offers the freedom to explore your own voice while being grounded in collaborative, professional and theoretical contexts. This approach ensures you graduate not only with a refined portfolio, but with the intellectual tools and industry insight needed to thrive as a contemporary illustrator.
