COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Game Art course is structured into three study blocks, each building on the last to develop students into confident and industry-ready game artists. In Study Block One, students begin with Development Practice, where they work in interdisciplinary teams to create small-scale game artefacts while engaging in reflective case studies to deepen their understanding of their own creative process. Alongside this, Concepts and Contexts focuses on visual development techniques, encouraging students to propose compelling visual concepts through iterative design, exploring industry-standard tools, workflows, and research methods.In Study Block Two, the Crafting and Refining module pushes students to develop stronger analytical and research skills, enabling them to adopt critical and creative approaches to a variety of game art practices. Students explore different workflows and disciplines to enrich their craft. Simultaneously, the Game Development Project immerses them in collaborative work with students from across the Games Academy. Together, they design, prototype, test, and refine a game concept, gaining hands-on experience with gameplay structuring and iterative development.In the final Study Block, students undertake a Major Project, the culmination of their studies. Guided by a supervisor, they either work independently or in teams to research, develop, and execute a polished, professional-standard game art project. This final piece can build on previous coursework or introduce a new concept entirely and is expected to demonstrate the student's highest level of skill and creative vision. Throughout the course, students gain practical experience, professional insight, and a deep understanding of the creative and collaborative processes behind game development, preparing them for a successful career in the games industry.
