COURSE CURRICULUM

This course is structured around three intensive study blocks, each designed to develop both the technical and critical skills needed for a successful career in film and television. In the first block, students engage in practical group work to gain experience across all stages of short film and TV production. Through seminars and workshops in screenwriting, cinematography, editing, and sound, students build technical competence while developing an understanding of legal, ethical, and risk management requirements. This hands-on work is supported by contextual studies that explore how cultural contexts influence screen production and audience reception. Guest lectures and masterclasses from industry professionals offer valuable insights into real-world practices.In the second study block, students expand their perspective beyond Western cultural norms, creating a 10-minute film, TV piece, or screenplay influenced by research into globalisation. Contextual studies focus on global screen representations and the role of media in shaping identity, conflict, and activism. Students explore themes such as postcolonialism, transnational production, and environmentalism. Industry exposure is deepened through optional visits to international film festivals and internships.The final study block allows students to tailor their project to future goals. They may produce a dissertation or research portfolio for academic progression, or create a 20-minute film, TV pilot, or screenplay for industry readiness.
