COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Software Engineering degree offers a comprehensive and industry-focused education in computing, beginning with a broad foundation in year one. Students explore core principles of computing, digital creativity, and development fundamentals while gaining hands-on experience in team-based projects. Modules like Data Fundamentals and Individual Programming Project introduce data science life cycles and object-oriented programming, encouraging ethical and sustainable practice. Multidisciplinary teamwork further prepares students for collaborative work environments. In year two, the course shifts towards deeper specialisation, with modules such as Algorithms & Optimisation, Computational Mathematics, and Software Architecture focusing on performance, efficiency, and secure system design. Students explore artificial intelligence and machine learning in real-world contexts while considering ethical implications. Development Operations and Embedded Systems introduce advanced deployment, security strategies, and embedded computer systems through team-based engineering challenges. Year three offers greater independence and a focus on professional readiness. In Programming Tools, students develop utilities to improve developer workflows, combining technical and user-experience insights. The Research & Development modules guide students through the creation of a novel computing artefact, supported by academic research and presented in a dissertation and demo. Digital Innovation fosters entrepreneurial skills through market research, IP management, and product development, culminating in an investment-style pitch. Finally, the Major Collaboration module challenges students to deliver a substantial, multi-skilled team project, often with real-world or industry-aligned applications.
