COURSE CURRICULUM

The Textile Design course offers a comprehensive, practice-led education grounded in sustainability, creative exploration, and professional development. In the first year, students build foundational creative and technical skills, developing their individual design voices through studio-based projects and workshops. Modules focus on colour theory, pattern making, natural dyeing, fibre analysis, and responsible material use. Students explore personal identity and inclusivity while learning about the historical and cultural contexts of textiles through academic research and Falmouth’s own Textiles and Dress Collection. In the second year, students expand their technical expertise and begin to explore their place in the wider industry. Through modules like Process, Connection, and Responsible Production, they take creative risks and engage with live briefs, external clients, and advanced techniques such as jacquard, digital embroidery, and complex repeats. They also collaborate across disciplines and deepen their theoretical understanding with research into objects, identities, and representations. The third year is focused on preparing students for professional practice. Students create self-directed studio briefs, build original textile collections, and begin producing promotional materials such as portfolios. They explore future-focused, sustainable design in the Futures module and complete a dissertation or equivalent guided by personal interests. Innovation, independence, and employability are central, with strong support for developing each student’s individual identity and direction as a designer.
