COURSE CURRICULUM
This course offers a comprehensive, hands-on education in technical theatre and live event production, structured over three years to gradually build skills, experience and industry understanding. In the first year, students are introduced to core stagecraft techniques and production processes, covering lighting, sound, set construction, and stage management. Alongside technical training, they explore theatre history and performance cultures, gaining insight into the professional demands of a production practitioner. Students also begin working on live performances, events, and summer schools, while receiving nationally recognised health and safety training. By the end of the year, they begin to specialise in areas such as digital mixing, 3D CAD, lighting visualisation, and contemporary rigging. In the second year, learning becomes more collaborative and professionally focused. Students work with peers from other creative disciplines on performance projects and take on work placements. Modules cover venue and production management, including safety, sustainability, and legal compliance, while the design project deepens skills in conceptualisation, 3D modelling, and multimedia design. Through experimentation with digital performance technologies such as projection mapping, motion capture, and digital editing, students gain experience with contemporary tools. A collaborative project encourages cross-disciplinary creativity and technical innovation. The final year focuses on independent enquiry and advanced practical skills, preparing students for industry entry. Students undertake a major professional project based on their chosen career goals, involving placements or real-world events, and showcase their work publicly. Modules in production management emphasise leadership and project realisation, while a research-led module examines the future of technical theatre and industry innovation. Students also reflect critically on their practice, assessing the impact and effectiveness of their work in professional contexts. By graduation, they emerge as capable, forward-thinking professionals ready for diverse roles in live performance and technical production.
