COURSE CURRICULUM

The Marine & Natural History Photography degree offers a comprehensive three-year journey that blends technical expertise, environmental understanding and visual storytelling. In the first year, students build foundational photographic skills while developing research and critical thinking abilities. They explore local biodiversity and marine habitats through hands-on modules such as Developing Practice, Biodiversity and Habitat, and The Marine Environment. Field trips to both land and marine environments provide immersive learning opportunities. Students can also choose between land or underwater photography, with underwater options requiring specific diving qualifications. Communication skills are fostered through modules like Communicating Nature, where students learn to convey scientific ideas through imagery and text.In the second year, students enhance their practice with more advanced still and moving image techniques. Through modules like Extending Practice and Introduction to Filmmaking, they deepen their technical skills and gain experience in both independent and collaborative projects. Modules such as Conservation Stories and Photography of the Natural World emphasize the role of visual media in driving environmental change. A short work placement gives students industry insight and professional context, preparing them for their final year.In the final year, students focus on a Major Project, which integrates their creative, technical and research skills. They support this with an extended essay in the Culture and the Environment module and develop a career-focused plan through the Professional and Entrepreneurial Practice module. By the end of the course, students emerge with a polished professional portfolio and a clear path into their chosen field within environmental photography and media.
