COURSE CURRICULUM

The Illustration degree is structured over three years to guide students through a progressive and immersive journey into professional illustration practice. In the first year, students are introduced to a wide range of creative processes through project briefs, workshops, and industry engagement. They begin to explore visual problem-solving, media experimentation, narrative communication, and audience understanding. Modules focus on building foundational skills and critical thinking while encouraging ethical, inclusive approaches to image-making.In the second year, students refine their practical and conceptual skills through advanced briefs and increased exposure to industry-facing opportunities. Emphasis is placed on independent and collaborative work, as students respond to challenging subjects and begin self-initiated projects. Modules include in-depth exploration of visual language, the role of illustration in societal change, and the development of a negotiated practice that allows students to define their emerging interests. Collaboration is central, with students working across disciplines and beyond the university environment.In the final year, students focus on consolidating their practice and building a distinctive creative identity. They produce a major independent body of work supported by research and critical analysis. Alongside this, they engage in professional development through the creation of a digital portfolio and industry-focused contextual report. Modules guide students in developing a unique visual voice and preparing for transition into the creative industries. The program culminates in a Final Major Project that showcases students’ intellectual, technical, and self-reflective capabilities. Throughout the course, students gain valuable experience working with art directors, publishers, and illustration professionals, preparing them for a successful and sustainable career in the field.
