COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Fashion Design degree equips students with the creative and practical skills needed to address the fashion industry’s environmental and ethical challenges. In the first year, students build a foundation in sustainable design practices through hands-on tutorials and workshops. They develop core skills in research, drawing, pattern cutting, and garment construction while exploring circular design through modules like Redesign and Cut and Construct. Themes such as inclusivity, global histories, and cultural awareness are introduced in Belonging and Histories, while experimentation with deadstock fabrics encourages innovation in Colour and Shape.Year two focuses on real-world application and industry engagement. Students respond to live or simulated briefs in Industry Practice, deepening their understanding of ethics, sustainability, branding, and market positioning. They develop technical capabilities in digital design with CAD tools, reducing material waste, and explore construction techniques for activewear and knitwear. Collaboration and soft skills are strengthened through team-based challenge briefs, while the Innovation module encourages risk-taking and sustainable thinking in creative outputs. Theories further refine students’ critical understanding of fashion’s cultural and historical contexts and prepare them for their dissertation.In the final year, students design and produce a graduate collection aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Through intensive research and development, they refine their identity as fashion practitioners and prepare for industry entry. A dissertation allows for in-depth exploration of an individual topic, while the Professional Strategies module supports career planning, including portfolio development, lookbooks, and engagement with professional competitions. With a focus on sustainability, creative innovation, and professional readiness, the course prepares students to become responsible and forward-thinking fashion designers.
