COURSE CURRICULUM

This music and sound course offers a dynamic, practice-based journey through the evolving world of creative music technology. In the first year, students gain foundational skills in music theory, production, sound design, electronic music, and studio techniques. Working with industry-standard tools, they explore sound’s relationship with media and culture while developing their own specialist practice and academic writing. Key modules focus on designing sound for visual media, expanding musical vocabularies, collaborative studio practice, and understanding music in cultural contexts.In the second year, students deepen their technical and creative capabilities through a focus on production, business, and future-facing music practices. Modules explore the role of the music producer, copyright, sustainable business practices, and the cultural impact of sound and technology. Specialist music practice continues, supporting collaboration and co-creation. Optional modules allow for tailored development in areas such as immersive audio, songwriting, experimental performance, media composition, session musicianship, new media aesthetics, and music entrepreneurship, offering flexibility and creative exploration.The final year focuses on preparing students for professional life. They produce a showcase portfolio reflecting their chosen specialism, supported by modules in professional development and career planning. The dissertation offers a chance to explore a subject of personal interest in depth, while the Your Future module builds practical business skills in legal, marketing, and financial contexts. This final phase helps students solidify their artistic identity and entrepreneurial mindset as they transition into careers across the music and sound industries. With a balance of theory, practice, and industry insight, the course equips students to thrive in a wide range of roles, from music production and sound design to composition, performance, and creative business.
