COURSE CURRICULUM

The Animation BA(Hons) at Falmouth University is a three-year program designed to transform students into skilled animators ready for industry success. In the first year, students explore 2D, 3D, and stop-motion techniques, mastering the fundamental principles of animation through modules like Animation Practice 1 and 2, which focus on building technical skills and introducing 3D workflows. Underpinning 1 and 2 develop drawing, design, and narrative skills alongside critical media and cultural theory, while Production Design and Design & Motion introduce the animation pipeline and visual storytelling using industry-standard software. The second year emphasizes collaboration, with students working on live client briefs in modules like Planning and Create, enhancing communication, time management, and team roles. Underpinning 3 and Production allow specialization in 2D, 3D, or stop-motion, while Pre-production Collaboration fosters creative thinking, and Critical Proposal prepares students for final-year research. In the third year, the focus shifts to the final major project, where students pitch original film ideas to industry professionals in Ideas and Development. Successful pitches advance to Major Pre-production and Production, where students demonstrate high-level technical and professional skills in collaborative settings. Critical Research enables independent exploration of a chosen animation topic, and Profile helps students build a professional portfolio to launch their careers. Throughout, the program blends practical training, critical thinking, and industry-relevant experience in a studio-based environment, fostering creativity and preparing students for diverse roles in the animation industry or further study, all while leveraging Falmouth’s inspiring coastal setting to fuel innovative storytelling.
