COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Computing program offers a set of carefully designed modules that provide a strong foundation in both theoretical and practical aspects of computing. Students begin with software development, progressing through Software Development 1 and 2, which introduce fundamental programming concepts, coding practices, and software engineering principles, preparing students to design, implement, and test robust software solutions. Web design and development and programming for the web focus on building functional, user-friendly, and responsive web applications, giving students practical skills in front-end and back-end development, web frameworks, and interactive design. The computer systems module explores the underlying hardware, operating systems, and network components that support modern computing, helping students understand the interaction between software and hardware. Database systems provide the knowledge and skills needed to design, implement, and manage efficient and secure databases, including data modelling, query languages, and optimisation techniques. To integrate these skills in a real-world context, students undertake a group project, which develops teamwork, project management, and problem-solving abilities while allowing them to apply their knowledge to a practical computing challenge. Collectively, these modules equip students with a comprehensive understanding of computing principles, practical technical skills, and collaborative experience, preparing them for a range of roles in software development, web development, database administration, and other areas within the computing industry.
