COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Health Psychology is structured around a combination of theoretical, work-related, and research-based modules. All modules are compulsory, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of health psychology, with no optional modules. Block 1, Theories and Perspectives in Health Psychology, delves into the biopsychosocial model, exploring how various behaviours, such as exercise and alcohol consumption, affect overall health and well-being. Block 2, Critical and International Perspectives on Health Psychology, integrates psychological and sociological frameworks to understand health and illness within disadvantaged communities, both in the UK and globally. Block 3, Promoting Health, Managing Illness, applies theoretical perspectives to health promotion and managing chronic illnesses, emphasizing the development of professional skills in these areas. Block 4, Mind, Body, Food, and Health, focuses on the interaction between the mind and body, particularly exploring stress and eating behaviours and their impact on health. Block 5 and 6, the Advanced Applied Psychology Dissertation, is a substantial independent research project where students select a health-related topic of interest and present their findings in a journal article format. Additionally, students undertake Research Methods for Applied Psychologists, which introduces them to various research designs and data collection methods, with a focus on qualitative approaches, and Applied Statistics in Health Psychology, which enhances their skills in statistical analysis and psychometric theory, as well as their digital competencies. This comprehensive curriculum ensures that students are well-equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to work as health psychologists in a variety of settings.
