COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Sustainable Engineering Management for International Development is designed to address the complex challenges faced by engineering professionals operating in global contexts. The course begins with the Engineering Business Environment and Research Methods module, which explores how engineering organisations can be proactive contributors to environmental, social, and economic sustainability. This module also equips students with essential research skills, including research design, data analysis, and critical evaluation, all of which are vital for the successful completion of the final individual research project or dissertation. The focus on sustainability is further reinforced in the Resource Efficient Design & Manufacturing module, where students explore efficient and low-carbon strategies across both product and process design. Emphasis is placed on eliminating waste, optimising resource use, and embedding circular economy principles into manufacturing systems. The course also includes the Digital Transformations module, which introduces the role of Information Systems (IS) in enabling transformative change across industries and society. It demonstrates how digitalisation can be used as a powerful tool for improving environmental performance, operational efficiency, and business adaptability in the face of global sustainability challenges. Complementing the technical focus, the Entrepreneurship and Strategic Decision Making module gives students the mindset and tools to think critically and act decisively in complex environments. It addresses how individuals and organisations assess risks, recognise opportunities, and innovate to create impact, with a strong focus on problem-solving and leadership. The course culminates in a substantial individual project during the final semester, which allows students to integrate their technical specialism with managerial and strategic insights. With close guidance from experienced academics and technicians, students undertake a self-directed investigation that reflects their professional interests and career aspirations, producing a research outcome that demonstrates both analytical depth and practical relevance to sustainable engineering management in a global context.
