COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Sustainable Engineering equips students with a deep understanding of critical issues facing modern engineering, particularly in the context of sustainability. The Engineering Business Environment and Research Methods module focuses on the role of business in a globalized, rapidly evolving world. Students explore how industries address challenges arising from environmental policies, legislation, and societal shifts. The module also develops research skills, preparing students for their dissertation through training in methodologies, data interpretation, and academic writing. The Data Analytics for Sustainable Energy Systems module introduces students to the fundamentals of data science, using Python programming to manage large datasets in the context of energy systems. The module covers advanced topics like machine learning, optimization, and decision-making under uncertainty, applying these concepts to real-world energy case studies. In the Renewable Energy: Generation, Use and Storage module, students examine various renewable energy sources such as hydroelectric, wind, and solar power, alongside energy storage solutions. They learn to conduct techno-economic analyses and optimize energy systems. The module also addresses low-carbon transport technologies, smart cities, and energy policy, with hands-on experience using industry-standard software and equipment. The Electrical Power Systems: Operation and Analysis module delves into the technical aspects of power generation, transmission, and grid operations, with a focus on integrating renewable energy sources. Students gain practical experience using grid simulation software and smart grid trainer equipment, preparing them for careers in electrical power system design and optimization. Finally, the Individual Project module allows students to conduct independent research on a relevant topic in sustainable engineering, developing skills in problem-solving, analysis, and presentation, culminating in a comprehensive research report.
