COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Sustainable Engineering provides a well-rounded set of modules aimed at addressing the challenges of sustainability in various engineering disciplines. The Engineering Business Environment and Research Methods module focuses on understanding how businesses adapt to environmental policies, legislation, and societal changes. Students will explore topics such as carbon trading, green accounting, and life-cycle analysis, while also learning research methodologies that will support their dissertation. In the Data Analytics for Sustainable Energy Systems module, students gain skills in managing large datasets and applying data science techniques like machine learning and optimization to real-world energy system challenges. The module includes hands-on experience with case studies from across the energy value chain, covering topics such as demand forecasting and renewable energy prediction. The Resource Efficient Design and Manufacture module encourages students to adopt a whole-systems approach to design, focusing on energy management and circular economy principles. Students explore strategies to reduce waste and optimize resource use at every stage of the product or process life cycle. In the Renewable Energy: Generation, Use, and Storage module, students study various renewable energy sources, including hydroelectricity, wind, and solar power, and learn how to analyze their technical and economic viability. The module also covers energy storage, demand flexibility, and the integration of renewable technologies with smart cities and transport systems. The Sustainable Development in Practice module equips students with the skills to tackle sustainability challenges in real-world contexts, drawing on case studies and theories of social change. Finally, the Individual Project module provides students with the opportunity to conduct independent research, applying their knowledge to a relevant topic in sustainability, preparing them for professional or academic careers in sustainable engineering.
