COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Architecture and Sustainability provides a comprehensive and research-driven approach to understanding sustainable development in the built environment. In Block 1, the module Methods for Sustainability Research introduces students to the foundations of academic inquiry in the context of architecture and sustainability. The module focuses on research design, methodologies, and strategies tailored to sustainability challenges, equipping students with the tools needed to critically analyse existing literature and develop their own research pathways. Assessment is based on a 3000-word report that demonstrates an understanding of relevant research techniques and sustainable approaches. In Block 2, Design Research Lab 1 offers a practical platform to apply these research skills through site analysis and scheme development. Working collaboratively, students assess complex architectural issues in existing buildings and present individual design proposals aimed at enhancing sustainable development. The assessment includes both group work and an individual project, encouraging team collaboration alongside independent critical thinking. Blocks 3 and 4 are centred around Building Performance Modelling and Design Research Lab 2, which run concurrently to provide a robust, practice-based learning experience. Building Performance Modelling introduces students to environmental evaluation tools and dynamic thermal simulation software, guiding them through the process of analysing energy performance and thermal comfort across various stages of design. The course encourages experimentation with different building forms, materials, energy systems, and passive strategies to optimise sustainability. Design Research Lab 2 builds on this by allowing students to implement their research into the design of a detailed building proposal, considering planning policies, legislation, and sustainable design principles. Assessment in these modules includes a combination of coursework, portfolios, and technical evaluations. In Blocks 5 and 6, the course culminates with a 12,000-word dissertation. This final module provides students the freedom to explore a topic of personal interest in depth, synthesising the skills and knowledge gained throughout the course into an independent research project.
