COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Biomedical Science program is structured over three semesters, combining theoretical knowledge with practical laboratory skills to prepare students for advanced roles in biomedical research and diagnostics. In semester one, students undertake two core modules. The first, Advanced Molecular Biology and Genomics, focuses on molecular diagnostic techniques used across various biomedical fields, covering both infectious and non-infectious diseases. Students learn how molecular biology applies to different stages of diagnosis, including prenatal testing, disease predisposition, monitoring, and personalised medicine. The module also includes discussion on laboratory quality control and management. The second module, Advanced Pathobiology and Diagnostics, deepens students’ understanding of current practices and technologies across key biomedical disciplines such as blood sciences, microbiology, and immunology. Through lectures and workshops, students develop critical evaluation skills and gain hands-on experience with advanced diagnostic tools. In semester two, the focus shifts to research techniques and biomedical specialisms. Advanced Research Methods and Biomedical Techniques trains students in research methodologies and laboratory practices, building competence in both executing and interpreting a range of advanced biomedical techniques. The second module, Advanced Biomedical Science Specialisms, allows students to explore one of three optional specialisms—Cancer Biology, Nutrition and Public Health, or Applied Biotechnology—while completing a mandatory component on Leadership and Quality Management, which covers project management and quality assurance in healthcare. Each specialism is designed to encourage critical thinking and provide insight into emerging challenges and research within that field. In semester three, students complete a Postgraduate Research Project. This independent, laboratory-based project gives students the opportunity to design and carry out original research, analyse data, and present findings in a professional format. Supporting all academic modules across the year is the non-credit bearing Advanced Professional and Laboratory Skills module. This offers practical and professional development workshops, from advanced lab techniques to scientific writing, referencing, and career planning. This comprehensive MSc course combines academic depth, practical skill-building, and research training to equip graduates for careers in biomedical science, diagnostics, healthcare, and beyond.
