COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Fashion and Textiles course is structured to enhance creative thinking, technical skill, and academic research through a series of progressive modules that support students in developing a personal and professional design identity. The course begins with Block 1: Design Innovation, which encourages students to explore conceptual thinking, creativity, and the technical process of product realisation. Through a self-directed brief, students develop innovative responses within their chosen specialism—be it Fashion Design, Footwear and Accessories, or Textile Design—by conducting secondary and primary research to shape original design outcomes. In Block 2: Research and Design Communication, the focus shifts to developing both creative and technical communication skills. Students will enhance their illustration, technical drawing, and digital presentation abilities, while also being introduced to advanced research methodologies. Emphasis is placed on ethical research, critical thinking, and professional presentation, culminating in a comprehensive portfolio and a strong foundation for future design projects or academic research. In Block 3, students choose one of three specialist pathways. "Design Live" offers an opportunity to respond to an industry-linked live brief tailored to individual interests and market context. "Narrative Spaces" explores storytelling through spatial design, encouraging students to investigate how physical and digital environments—like retail and exhibition spaces—can be immersive and emotive. Alternatively, "Digital Development" immerses students in emerging technologies such as 3D prototyping, XR, and body scanning, fostering innovation in sustainable digital fashion and textiles. Block 4: PRE-Collection builds on design and construction skills through 2D and 3D experimentation, refining students’ creative identity and preparing a clear design direction. The course culminates in Blocks 5 and 6: Major Project, where students execute an independent, in-depth design or academic project. This final stage offers flexibility in focus—either on creative practice supported by a critical evaluation or an academically driven study underpinned by design work—helping students articulate their vision and prepare for future professional or academic pursuits.
