COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the Computer Science program, students are introduced to key foundational areas that underpin the subject. The journey begins with Database Design and Implementation, where students learn how to structure, manage, and protect data using relational databases and SQL—essential skills for many modern applications. This is followed by Fundamental Concepts of Computer Science, which introduces core ideas such as propositional logic, set theory, software modelling, user interface design, and ethical computing. Students then move into Computer Programming, gaining hands-on experience in problem-solving through code, with a focus on designing trustworthy, well-tested software. The year concludes with Operating Systems and Networks, providing insight into computer architecture, how operating systems function, and the basics of computer networks andcybersecurity.Inn the second year, the focus shifts to building more advanced and practical computing skills. The year starts with Object-Oriented Design and Development, teaching students how to build scalable software systems using Java and its extensive libraries. Data Structures and Algorithms follows, covering fundamental data structures like stacks, queues, trees, and hash tables, and the algorithms used to manipulate them efficiently. Students then apply their knowledge in Web Application Development, where they learn to design and implement secure and accessible web applications using both client-side and server-side technologies. The year ends with the Software Engineering Team Project, a simulated workplace experience where students work in teams using agile development methods to build a functional software solution, applying both technical and ethical principles.In the final year, students refine their professional and technical skills while exploring areas of personal or career interest. It begins with Software Development: Methods and Standards, where students explore development methodologies such as Scrum and DevOps and learn about industry standards in security and risk management. This is followed by Mobile App Development and Big Data, which combines mobile application development with topics like cloud storage, big data management, and the ethical considerations surrounding AI and surveillance. For Blocks 3 and 4, students choose two from a set of specialist options: Functional Programming, Advanced Web Development, and Embedded Systems and IoT, allowing them to deepen their knowledge in a chosen area. The year culminates in the Development Project, a major independent piece of work where students apply everything they've learned to create, test, and evaluate a substantial software application, demonstrating their readiness for the tech industry or further study.
