COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the Quantity Surveying course, students are introduced to foundational knowledge and practical skills essential to the built environment. Block 1, Sustainable Building Principles, explores the concept of sustainable and regenerative buildings, environmental regulations, and the impact of design trends on reducing environmental footprints. Students also gain insight into building users’ comfort, assessment tools, and the professional roles involved in sustainable design. Block 2, Professional Quantity Surveying Skills and Management, covers the responsibilities of quantity surveyors, including cost planning, ethical considerations, legal regulations, and the importance of inclusivity and teamwork within the profession. Block 3, Building Technology 1, focuses on the technological aspects of construction, introducing students to basic structural principles, materials, and sustainability concepts through case studies. Block 4, Economics of Construction, equips students with cost measurement techniques for small-scale buildings, teaching them to interpret construction drawings, estimate material and labour costs, and manage risks effectively. In the second year, Block 1, Project Management Practice, introduces the principles of managing construction projects, covering building regulations, quality control, risk management, and the impact of globalisation. Block 2, Finance and Costing, reinforces cost estimation skills and introduces cost monitoring systems. Blocks 3 and 4 are split between Building Technology 2 and Methods of Measurement. Building Technology 2 develops students’ understanding of environmental performance in buildings, adaptive reuse, and innovative materials and systems. Methods of Measurement advances their practical surveying skills, focusing on industry-standard measurement techniques and tools like CostX, with emphasis on tendering and the production of Bills of Quantities. In the final year, Block 1, Contract, Law and Procurement, deepens legal and contractual knowledge, focusing on procurement routes and the ethical responsibilities of professionals. Block 2, Quantity Surveying Practice, builds on client care, procurement strategies, and the use of BIM for data management in construction. Finally, Blocks 3 and 4 consist of a Dissertation and Integrated Project, allowing students to independently research a relevant topic and work collaboratively on a design brief that integrates sustainable design, technology, affordability, and future resilience into a real-world construction challenge.
