COURSE CURRICULUM
In the first year of the Psychology program, students are introduced to the essential foundations of the discipline, all aligned with the core areas defined by the British Psychological Society (BPS). The year begins with the Professional Skills for Psychologists module, which focuses on equipping students with key academic and professional competencies to ensure a smooth transition into higher education and prepare them for future careers. Alongside this, the Core Areas and Research Methods 1 module provides an overview of biological, cognitive, and developmental psychology, while embedding quantitative research techniques. The Applied Psychology module expands students' understanding by introducing them to various fields of applied psychology from UK, European, and international contexts. Later, the Core Areas and Research Methods 2 module continues to build foundational knowledge in social psychology, personality, and intelligence, complemented by qualitative research methods. In the second year, the program deepens students' understanding with modules like Mind, Brain and Behaviour, which explores advanced topics in biological and cognitive psychology through both theoretical learning and practical applications. Psychology and Mental Health addresses the ways psychological disorders are defined and explained, while Psychology Across the Lifespan takes a developmental approach to understanding human growth from infancy to old age. The Psychology of Social Problems module applies psychological concepts to contemporary global and societal issues, reflecting the university’s commitments to decolonization and sustainability. Personality and Social Psychology provides more advanced study into personality theories, intelligence, and social behavior, supporting students in developing a research project. In the final year, students undertake the mandatory Psychology Project, allowing them to conduct original empirical research, and study Conceptual Issues and Critical Debates in Psychology, focusing on contrasting psychological perspectives. The Employability Skills and Psychology module offers a valuable work placement experience, bridging theory with practice. Optional modules provide flexibility to tailor studies towards personal interests and career goals.
