COURSE CURRICULUM
In the first year of the program, students are introduced to the academic and professional foundations necessary for success in psychology through Block 1, which focuses on Professional Skills for Psychologists. This module supports the transition to higher education by building essential skills for academic study and career development. In Block 2, students study Core Areas and Research Methods 1, covering the key paradigms of biological, cognitive, and developmental psychology, alongside an introduction to quantitative research methods. Block 3 introduces Psychological and Social Theories of Health and Illness, where students explore the psychological and sociological factors that influence health and wellbeing, and gain insight into how illness affects individuals from both perspectives. Block 4 continues with Core Areas and Research Methods 2, expanding on the study of social, personality, and intelligence psychology, incorporating international viewpoints and qualitative research approaches. In the second year, Block 1 deepens understanding of biological and cognitive psychology in Mind, Brain and Behaviour, with practical sessions enhancing students' knowledge of research design and advanced quantitative analysis. Block 2, Psychology Across the Lifespan, focuses on development through all life stages and the connections between physical, social, and psychological changes. Block 3 begins with Application of Psychological and Social Theories of Health and Illness, applying previously learned theories to real-world health scenarios. Students then choose between Psychology and Mental Health or Psychology of Social Problems, depending on their interests. Block 4 explores social psychology, personality, and intelligence in greater depth, allowing students to carry out an independent research project. In the final year, students engage with core debates in psychology in Conceptual and Historical Issues in Psychology and gain real-world experience in Employability Skills and Psychology. Students then choose from a wide range of specialist modules such as counselling, neuropsychology, wellbeing, addiction, activism, and data science. Block 3 offers further choice in education-related modules, and Block 4 culminates in a major empirical Psychology Project where students showcase their skills through original research.
