COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the program, students are introduced to the fundamental concepts and methods of psychology while also exploring key criminological topics. Block 1 begins with Professional Skills for Psychologists, aimed at developing essential academic and transferable skills to help students transition smoothly into higher education and build a foundation for future professional development. In Block 2, Core Areas and Research Methods 1 provides an introduction to biological, cognitive, and developmental psychology, alongside training in quantitative research methods. Block 3 shifts focus to criminology with the Contemporary Issues in Criminology module, where students examine complex social problems such as crime, harm, and justice, with attention to themes like race, class, gender, and sexuality. Block 4 continues the psychology journey with Core Areas and Research Methods 2, focusing on social psychology, personality, and intelligence, incorporating qualitative research techniques and global perspectives. In the second year, students further develop their understanding with Mind, Brain and Behaviour in Block 1, exploring advanced biological and cognitive psychology while enhancing their quantitative research skills. Block 2, Psychology Across the Lifespan, examines human development through all life stages, highlighting the interplay between psychological domains. Block 3 offers a selection of modules covering mental health, domestic violence, restorative justice, drug use, and criminal justice, enabling students to tailor their learning toward personal interests and social issues. Block 4 returns to core psychology with Personality and Social Psychology, preparing students to undertake their own research. In the final year, students begin with Conceptual and Historical Issues in Psychology in Block 1, exploring major debates within psychology. Block 2 presents various optional modules in areas such as counselling, neuropsychology, wellbeing, addiction, and cultural psychology. Block 3, Emerging Issues in Criminology, encourages critical engagement with real-world problems, and finally, in Block 4, students complete a Psychology Project, conducting original research and demonstrating advanced analytical and methodological skills.
