COURSE CURRICULUM

Across three years, this Health, Wellbeing and Society course equips students with the knowledge and skills to understand health from multiple social, psychological, and public health perspectives. In Year 1, students begin by exploring the historical development of social services and the welfare state, examining key concepts in health and welfare. They gain foundational research skills and are introduced to psychological and sociological theories that explain individual health experiences. The year concludes with a focus on lifestyle and health improvement within broader public health frameworks. Year 2 builds on this foundation by examining health and disease within communities through the lens of epidemiology and addressing health inequalities. Students critically engage with contemporary health care dilemmas and apply theoretical models to understand how psychological and social factors influence illness. The year also advances research skills through a deeper study of real-world methodologies and data analysis, preparing students for independent research. In the final year, students examine health promotion and public health, exploring theories, evidence-based interventions, and global public health challenges. They can tailor their studies through optional modules covering topics like leadership, mental health, substance use, social exclusion, and gender in health care, allowing them to align learning with their career goals. The year culminates with a major independent project on a specialised health topic, where students apply research skills to explore their chosen area in depth. This program blends academic theory with practical inquiry, encouraging critical thinking, ethical awareness, and a holistic understanding of health in society.
