The Forensic Science program offers a multidisciplinary pathway that combines scientific knowledge, investigative skills, and professional development. In year one, students begin with forensic, professional and quantitative skills, which introduces essential academic and laboratory techniques, data analysis, and foundational knowledge for working in forensic environments. This is followed by foundations of biology for forensic science, where students explore cellular biology, human anatomy, and the biological principles necessary for understanding evidence like blood, hair, and tissue samples. Essentials of forensic investigations introduces students to crime scene protocols, evidence collection, scene preservation, and legal considerations, setting the groundwork for practical forensic work. Foundations of chemistry for forensic science rounds out the year by providing a comprehensive overview of chemical principles and how they apply to forensic contexts, such as drug identification and toxicology. In year two, the focus shifts to developing analytical and case-based expertise. Analytical forensic chemistry teaches students to use instrumental techniques like gas chromatography and spectroscopy to examine physical evidence. Issues in criminal justice explores the legal system, ethical considerations, and the interface between forensic science and the courts. Bodies, tissues and fluids looks at the biological and pathological aspects of forensic science, including decomposition, trauma, and body fluid identification. Operation Vestigium, a case-based module, allows students to investigate drug and trace evidence in a simulated forensic case, building skills in evidence handling, documentation, and laboratory reporting. The final year emphasizes application and professionalism. Forensic case studies allows students to critically examine real cases and understand the strengths and weaknesses of forensic methodologies. Operation Ignis is a practical module focusing on fire investigation and toxicology, involving scene reconstruction and toxic substance analysis. The research project and professional skills module supports independent scientific research and the development of transferable skills. DNA profiling and the presentation of evidence covers genetic analysis techniques and how to effectively communicate forensic findings in a courtroom setting. The professional portfolio allows students to compile evidence of their skills and knowledge, preparing them for entry into the forensic science profession or further academic study.
