COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) 3D Animation & Visual Effects degree at De Montfort University is structured to progressively develop students’ technical expertise, creative skills, and industry readiness over three years. In the first year, students focus on foundational skills through modules in 3D modelling and compositing, animation principles and techniques, collaborative filmmaking practice, and commercial content production. This stage emphasizes the core artistic and technical competencies required for animation and visual effects, while also introducing students to teamwork and project-based learning. In the second year, the course builds on these foundations with more specialized modules, including 3D creature design, character rigging and motion capture, narrative environment design, and creative enterprise. These modules allow students to develop advanced skills in creating complex characters and immersive digital worlds, while also fostering entrepreneurial thinking and professional practice. In the final year, students tackle higher-level, industry-relevant challenges through modules in 3D dynamics and simulations, choreography and character performance, virtual production technology, and a portfolio project. This year focuses on refining technical proficiency, storytelling ability, and creative innovation, culminating in a professional-standard portfolio that demonstrates readiness for careers in film, television, gaming, and immersive media industries. The program ensures graduates leave with a strong combination of artistic vision, technical skill, and industry awareness.
