COURSE CURRICULUM

The BEng Mechanical Engineering program is structured to provide students with a strong foundation in core engineering principles, practical design and manufacturing experience, and specialized knowledge in various areas. Over the course of three years, students progressively build their technical and professional skills, with each year focusing on key concepts, practical applications, and project work.In Year 1, students are introduced to essential engineering concepts. The first module, Engineering Tools and Principles 1, focuses on the fundamentals of mathematics and solid mechanics, covering topics such as stress, strain, and torsion, as well as basic electronics principles. Building on this knowledge, Engineering Tools and Principles 2 expands on dynamics, including topics like Newton’s laws, linear and angular motion, and friction, while also delving deeper into electronic principles such as RLC circuits and operational amplifiers. In the third module, Mechanical Design and Manufacturing 1, students learn the key elements of engineering drawings and the design process. They also gain practical experience by working in teams to develop solutions for design challenges, considering the product lifecycle, sustainability, and ethics. This is supported by numerical tools such as Computer Aided Engineering (CAE), programming, and thermodynamics. The final module, Mechanical Design and Manufacturing 2, takes students further into practical manufacturing by having them produce and test working prototypes based on their design solutions, continuing to focus on sustainability and ethical considerations.Year 2 builds on the foundational knowledge and introduces more advanced concepts. The first module, Mechanical, Energy and Aeronautical Tools and Principles, extends mathematical concepts like vector calculus and Fourier series and covers fluid mechanics and heat transfer. These principles are applied to real-world systems such as aircraft design and power generation. In Dynamic, Instrumentation and Control, students learn about system dynamics, vibration analysis, and control systems, with the help of tools like MATLAB and Simulink. The third module, Mechanical Materials and Structures, focuses on materials science, examining materials’ properties, processing, and testing, while also introducing practical lab exercises for material selection and analysis. The final module of the year, Design and Project Management, combines project planning, budgeting, and stakeholder management with the use of advanced computer-aided design (CAD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools, allowing students to analyze the performance of mechanical components under various conditions. In the Final Year, students specialize further and focus on both technical depth and professional practice. The Advanced Mechanical Materials and Professional Practice module addresses the science and technology of emerging materials, including their deposition and processing, and also emphasizes professional practice and employability skills. In Mechanical Energy Analysis, students study advanced concepts in power generation and propulsion, including the analysis of power plants and jet engines, with a focus on efficiency, emissions, and sustainability. The module covers various types of propulsion systems, from gas turbines to internal combustion engines, as well as jet propulsion theory, such as shock waves, supersonic flow, and combustion analysis. The final two blocks are project-based, allowing students to apply their learning in real-world contexts. These projects are tailored to student interests, with several tracks to choose from. The Modelling and Simulation track focuses on using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element Methods (FEM) to solve engineering problems. The Analysis, Programming, and Simulation track centers on software development and mathematical modeling, particularly in areas like flight simulators or control systems. The Materials and Design track is for students interested in structural design and materials science, while the 3D Printing and FEM track combines rapid prototyping with structural analysis, offering applications in fields like automotive, aerospace, or biomedical industries.Throughout the final year, students work on their individual projects, gaining practical experience while enhancing their research, communication, and project management skills. These projects enable students to apply their technical knowledge to real engineering challenges, preparing them for a career in mechanical engineering or further study in specialized fields.
