COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the Social Work course, students are introduced to the foundational knowledge and core skills needed for professional practice. The year begins with Preparation for Social Work Practice, where students explore the values, ethics, and expectations of the profession, developing essential communication and reflective skills. Introduction to Law, Policy and Procedure provides an overview of the legal and procedural frameworks that guide social work, focusing on key legislation and policies affecting service users. Understanding the Life Span (Human Growth and Development) introduces developmental theories and examines how life experiences shape individual behaviour and needs across different stages of life. The year concludes with Introduction to Social Work Theories and Skills in Practice, where students begin to apply theoretical perspectives to real-world scenarios and practice basic intervention techniques. In the second year, learning is deepened through a 70-day Practice Placement, giving students hands-on experience in a professional setting under supervision. Law for Social Work Practice builds on previous legal knowledge, focusing more specifically on laws relevant to children, adults, and safeguarding. Research Informed Practice helps students understand the importance of evidence-based approaches and how to apply research in everyday social work decision-making. Social Work Theories, Processes and Skills in Practice continues to build students' ability to critically analyse and implement theory in practice, while the Inter-Professional Education module encourages collaboration with other disciplines to develop holistic approaches to care. In the final year, students undertake a Research Project that allows them to explore an area of interest in depth, demonstrating academic and analytical skills. The Developing Professional Practitioner module supports students in preparing for their transition into the workforce, focusing on reflective practice and continuing professional development. Professional Judgement and Decision Making enhances students' critical thinking and risk assessment abilities. The course concludes with a 100-day Final Practice Placement, where students demonstrate competence across all areas of practice in preparation for professional registration.
