COURSE CURRICULUM
This History degree offers a thorough exploration of social, political, cultural, and global developments from the eighteenth century to the present day. In year one, students begin by studying Britain’s transformation since 1800, focusing on themes such as industrialisation, poverty, political reform, and multiculturalism. They also engage with broad interdisciplinary ideas around space, identity, and belonging through the module Journeys and Places. Other areas of study include nationalism, empire, and revolutions in the nineteenth century, as well as the impact of ideologies, war, and globalisation in the twentieth century. These modules develop key skills in source analysis, historical argument, and critical thinking. In year two, students investigate the Cold War from a global perspective, including its cultural, political, and ideological dimensions. They also reflect on career readiness in Exploring Work and Society, developing professional skills relevant to historical work and broader employment contexts. Further modules cover migration, multiculturalism, and racism, focusing on minority experiences and representation. The year concludes with Investigating the Past, where students deepen their understanding of historical sources and research methods in preparation for their final-year dissertation. In the final year, students delve into specialised topics aligned with faculty research, such as the Partition of India, post-colonial Africa, the Olympic Games, and the disintegration of Yugoslavia. They explore the aftermath of empire and decolonisation through global case studies, using approaches like postcolonial and Subaltern Studies. The War at Home focuses on civilian experiences during the Second World War in Britain and Germany, using both primary sources and historiographical analysis. The degree culminates in a dissertation, where students conduct independent research on a chosen topic, applying the skills and methods developed throughout the course. This program provides strong academic training, practical research experience, and preparation for a wide range of careers.
