COURSE CURRICULUM

This degree offers a blend of historical study and educational themes, providing a broad, flexible, and interdisciplinary learning experience. In year one, students explore the social, cultural, economic, and political development of Britain from 1800 to the late twentieth century. They engage with wider concepts such as place, identity, and sustainability through the Journeys and Places module, while also examining issues surrounding childhood, social justice, and education in contemporary society. The year concludes with a study of twentieth-century ideologies, global conflicts, and the impact of war and societal change.In year two, the focus expands to global history through the Cold War module, which explores the conflict's global reach and its cultural, political, and ideological dimensions. Students also begin preparing for post-graduation careers in the Exploring Work and Society module, where they develop transferable skills and explore professional settings. Optional modules allow for personalisation, with topics including wellbeing in education, music in primary schools, and the role of digital technology in learning. The year ends with Investigating the Past, where students explore historical sources and research methods, forming the foundation for their final-year dissertation.In the final year, students select a special subject from a range of expert-led research topics such as the Partition of India or the disintegration of Yugoslavia, gaining deep insight into focused historical themes. They also study the legacy of empire, nationalism, and post-colonial challenges in the Empire and its Aftermath module. Depending on their interests and goals, students can choose from further optional modules related to education, including teaching practice, gender and education, and curriculum design. The degree culminates in an independent dissertation project, allowing students to conduct in-depth research and develop advanced analytical and writing skills. This program prepares students for diverse career paths by combining historical knowledge with critical thinking, research ability, and applied educational themes.
