COURSE CURRICULUM
This course offers an interdisciplinary journey through history, heritage, society, and tourism, with a strong emphasis on critical thinking, research, and real-world application. In Year 1, students are introduced to modern British history from 1800 to the twentieth century, exploring political, cultural, social, and economic changes through primary sources and historiographical debates. The second module, Journeys and Places, adopts a cross-disciplinary approach to themes like identity, belonging, and sustainability, helping students link theory with personal and societal experiences. Students also gain a foundation in heritage studies, examining how heritage is defined, preserved, and interpreted at personal, national, and global levels. The final module of the year focuses on key twentieth-century ideologies and global conflicts, analyzing events such as the World Wars, the fall of empires, and the rise of extremism and terrorism. In Year 2, students explore the global Cold War, investigating its ideological, political, and cultural dimensions across regions such as Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The module also examines propaganda, diplomacy, and the broader legacy of the Cold War. Alongside this, the Exploring Work and Society module prepares students for professional pathways, building transferable skills while engaging with current social justice and sustainability challenges. Students further study the impact of tourism on culture and society, learning how identities and heritage are shaped and consumed in a global context. A methods-based module introduces historical research tools and prepares students for independent project work. In the final year, students study the interpretation and management of heritage sites, using international case studies to understand best practices. They also examine the long-term effects of imperialism and the creation of new nation-states. Another module focuses on destination management and branding strategies in tourism. The course concludes with a dissertation, where students conduct in-depth, independent research on a topic of their choice, demonstrating critical analysis and academic writing skills.
